Fluoride is not Safe for Children - or Anyone for that Matter New York Times

The New York Times published a piece that I found more alarming than usual. The article on dental health was one sided and misleading ignoring a whole swath of history as if it not mentioning it would make it go away. In the past year since I have revisited this section, I have yet to see an opinion or point of view presented by a doctor versed in the field of nutrition with a speciality in any area weighing in on or offering a solution outside the scope of drugs or a "we just don't know" stance. Admitting you don't know something is admirable but making out like nobody else does either is lazy at best and dangerous. Considering the widespread influence of the Times it's really inexcusable. NY Times I have a newsflash for you: The rest of the world is moving ahead with breakthroughs in nutritional science that seems to have passed you by! Somehow you haven't heard of The Linus Pauling Institute, TOSH, and you haven't even noticed that doctors like Dr. Perlmutter or William Davis, M.D. who both made the your Best Seller lists for their books on the detrimental affects of gluten on the brain and heart.
Could this be a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing? If so it's embarrassing. With so many possessing degrees and actively writing books, conducting clinical research and publishing studies on the health benefits of phyto - nutrients and  trace minerals it's strange. Even Doctor Oz who strives daily to educate the American public via TV on basic foundational health since 2009 has gone unnoticed? Someone better tell OPRAH.

For the uneducated in the science of nutrition and how the human body works in all it's intimate and complicated glory,  I urge you to actively seek out other points of view that offer hope and that are based on (gasp) science. Another New York Times Best Seller "The Healthy Home" by Dr. Myron Wentz and Dave Wentz devote Chapter 5 to the toxins found in dental products. The FDA has required a warning label on toothpaste since the late 1990's and I quote "..when it became clear that small children could be seriously injured - or even killed - by fluoride poisoning." (p. 87)

Which Brings Me to the Reason of Why I Am UPSET:
We are talking about children here. I am not happy about the "article" that appeared in the NY Times WELL Section this past week because the tone was more promotional than based on hard science. It had the verneer of science.  A "trade" group and doctor is pushing parents to start using fluoride on children from Age 2 hoping that others will tag along. Playing on the fears and guilt of parents who desire so much to do the right thing by their children is not giving parents tools i.e. all the knowledge they need to make critical decisions.
Fluoride Toxicity
Fact: Fluoride is a soluble salt, not a heavy metal. There are two basic types of fluoride. Calcium fluoride appears naturally in underground water sources and even seawater. Enough of it can cause skeletal or dental fluorosis, which weakens bone and dental matter. But it is not nearly as toxic, nor does it negatively affect so many other health issues as sodium fluoride, which is added to many water supplies and toothpaste.
Sodium Fluoride is a synthetic waste product of the nuclear, aluminum, and phosphate fertilizer industries. This fluoride has an amazing capacity to combine and increase the potency of other toxic materials. The sodium fluoride obtained from industrial waste and added to water supplies is also already contaminated with lead, aluminum, and cadmium.
It damages the liver and kidneys, weakens the immune system, possibly leading to cancer, creates symptoms that mimic fibromyalgia, and performs as a Trojan Horse to carry aluminum across the blood brain barrier. The latter is recognized as a source of the notorious "dumbing down" with lower IQ's and Alzheimer's effects of fluoride. Aside from the fact that fluoride is a neuro toxin that causes brain damage, shuts down the pineal gland and impedes healthy brain development it also displaces Vitamin D so essential to the healthy respiratory system, immune system and even influences mood.

MY TIPS
Feed your children sugar free foods - meaning foods with no added sugars if you don't want their young teeth to rot. Make sure they are getting enough D for strong immune system and healthy bones. Are they getting enough Omega 3 fatty acids to make sure their young and undeveloped brains are growing strong? Are these Omega 3's  PCB free?  This is what a child requires for eye health, mental cognition, and healthy skin just to name a few.
I make no secret of the fact that I am very disappointed and alarmed at this type of "reporting"  that passes for science today. Nutritional Science is indeed a science- and it  can be learned. If today's "doctors" haven't taken the time shame on them. Don't be a victim of a system. Get your game on!

Breast Health

The Short List on Self Care for Breast Health

1. Read More Books (list at end)
2. Ingest More Iodine. Find out how with "The Iodine Crisis"  by Lynne Farrow If you've got fluoride and/ or chlorine in your water supply check this out. Most cities and municipalities do. It's also in your toothpaste.
3. Take grape seed extract and vitamin C combo found in USANA's  Proflavanol C. It can  help reduce burning during radiation, boost immune system for both chemo and radiation. Reduces risks of infection. Helps your body produce healthy cells. Not to be taken with blood thinners
4. Increase intake of Omega 3 Fatty Acids has been shown to improve rate of breast cancer recovery.
5.  Soy Isoflavones Soy has been made into a bogeyman as of late but nutritional science shows that it can be beneficial to breast health. Non GMO please.
6.  Take Vitamin D
The epidemic of Vitamin D deficiency has hit 70% in North America. The long hours spent inside and the copious amounts of sun block applied has made it virtually impossible for your body to produce the critical amounts it needs to keep your immune system strong. Take USANA's  Vitamin D supplement. There is just D in it. In my counseling work I regularly encounter people who are woefully deficient. They always have a flu, a cold, feel rundown or are feeling depressed. Don't write if off. If in doubt get a blood test.
7.  Check your Teeth
If you have mercury amalgam fillings (falsely advertised as silver) go to a biological dentist and get them removed. Mercury is considered the most poisonous heavy metal and has nasty side effects.

Baby You Have Options

Breast health is a huge problem today and it deserves taking a look at from many different perspectives. Cancer just doesn't spring out of nowhere. Our lifestyle choices play an important role in our health. It's what we do today and day after day no matter our family history that is imperative. After all you can't live somebody else's life and you can influence your own. We already know that the rate of mastectomies, chemo and radiation treatments is through the roof for women here in North America and it's skyrocketing around the globe. What needs to be looked at more closely is a woman's own immune system. What may be affecting it adversely or undermining it?  Tell me how often do you hear doctors speaking about the  quality of water you are drinking, the amount of iodine you are consuming or what kind of beauty products you are applying? For me the old argument that your health has got nothing to do with what you are eating, drinking, breathing has hit critical mass. A woman's body is a living breathing reproducing organism intimately tied to that other living breathing reproducing organism Mother Earth. So how are we doing ladies? The good news is that you can choose and improve your life.

 Beauty and The Breast

The average female uses 15 products a day
Beauty products are affecting women's health. It's just so obvious we can't even see it. The beauty industry would do well with some pressure to step up their manufacturing process by finding solutions other than toxic ones to use as preservatives in products we use day after day and year after year. And ladies that toxic effect is cumulative! Once our official obsession with looking our best at all times has begun in our teens, it can have a deadly effect on a woman's breast health. The carcinogens found in everything from our makeup, shampoos, soaps, body gels, body lotions and facial creams are applied once, twice and sometimes three times a day. And guess what? You are ingesting that. Your skin ingests everything applied on it. In fact, it is a conduit from the outside world to your internal organs, reproductive system, brain, and digestive tract. As the saying goes, If you wouldn't eat don't put it on your skin. What you put on your skin will end up inside you. The cells of your body that make up your immune system will react poorly if they don't have what they require to live a healthy life cycle. If they poisoned instead of nurtured the outcome is predictable. Anything that isn't pure and cannot be excreted successfully ends up becoming lodged inside the fatty tissue that makes up the breast. In the Journal of Applied Technology published in January 2012 from the University of Reading UK a study of breast cancer patients found that 99% of  the tissue samples had parabens in them. 60% of the women had no less than five parabens in their breasts.

Meet Ethyl, Butyl & Methyl

Surely you've heard of Ethyl, Butyl and Methyl Paraben. Just look on the label of one of your fave beauty products. While they might sound like ladies names their behavior is less than ladylike. Any word that ends with paraben is a  petroleum derived product. It's purpose is to kill bacteria and mold.Unfortunately they are also carcinogens.  In today's world where water, food and nutrient supply is so deficient, my advice is to stay away from them while upping your optimal nutrients. Keep your immune system as healthy and strong as possible. That can be achieved. I was led to use and distribute Usana's Sense skin care and body care line because it uses a self preserving technology using liquid crystals. It has cell protecting ingredients in it like green tea and grape seed extract. Sure a lot of products claim to have those ingredients but the point is even if they do their effectiveness has been destroyed due to the presence of parabens. It becomes more about window dressing than results.Products need to be pure and properly manufactured meeting all standards to make them  fit for human consumption and not just marketed as if they do.

Tatami Sleeping from Q Bedding - Product Review

Beautiful Tatami style mat and pillow cases from QBedding

Keeping Cool and Sleeping Soundly Toxin Free

During our last 86F degree freak heatwave in the middle of April, I was tossing and turning struggling to sleep. It was too darn hot and my bedding, consisting of a flannel sheet and comforter had me sweating. I live on the top floor of a house where the sun beats down upon the roof. We had no time to place an air conditioner in the window and  with the weather's pendulum swinging from extreme hot to frigid within days and often within hours  I wasn't sure if it was worth the trouble. I was caught off guard so it was with relief that I received the Full Size version of the tatami style bedding from the QBedding company days later. I was told it would keep me cool and I was eager to try it out.

Acorus gramineus or Rush Grass

Soothing Aroma Beautiful Design

After wresting the package open I was struck by the green aroma emerging. The grass like smell of the mat was strong yet soothing and somehow reminiscent of green tea. Another surprise was the beauty of the mat and the pillow covers. A lovely detail of a green maple leaf pattern was sewn on the mat. The pillow cases were trimmed with a mint green silk like fabric. Laying the tatami on top of my Italian style day bed I lay down to sleep. I found the bed to be remarkably cooling and went to sleep easily.  I found myself asking why a Chinese owned bedding company was producing a product so strongly associated with Japan. The answer may be found in the year 712 AD in the book "Record of Ancient Matters"  which makes mention of tatami. The Empress Gemmei reigned in Nara, the capital of Japan during the years 710 to 794 AD. The city, modeled after the Chinese Chang'an the capital of Tang Dynasty borrowed heavily from the culture and customs from the continent. The Japanese upper classes adopted the fashions, writing style and Buddhist religion of the Chinese ruling class of the day. Nara was a largely agrarian based economy and someone somehow figured out the multiple benefits of using green rush grasses for bedding and insulation. For those millions of us who are dismayed with the idea of sleeping on toxic petroleum mattresses, consider the health benefits of tatami bedding;
1. Flame resistant  - A traditional tatami mat is hard to catch on fire. In Japan where earthquakes and fires are frequent this is a plus. In the West, it provides an option to the toxic bedding we sleep on aside from eliminating concern of ones bedding catching on fire spontaneously due to the combustive nature of commercial mattresses made out of solidified gasoline.
2. Cooling in the Summer  - With adequate circulation you may not need to crank up that air conditioner this summer to stay cool while sleeping. Tatami is made out of rush grasses that naturally breathe. I did find the temperature of my bedding cooler.
3. Hygroscopic - Tatami absorbs humidity so kiss those night sweats goodbye. An average size mat can absorb up to 500 cc of water effectively acting the way wicking does in clothing.
4. Air purifier - The material of the tatami has the ability to absorb nitrogen dioxide in the environment. If you live in a heavily polluted city or like me next to an expressway where car exhaust is spewed into the atmosphere 24/7 you'll breathe easier. One can only imagine how this natural technology would benefit asthma sufferers.
5. Anti - Bacterial - Tatami mats are purported to be anti bacterial in nature. It is said that they help keep E Coli at bay. Sounds like a perfect indoor playing field for your toddler.
6. Sound Proof - Tatami absorbs sound so placing it on the floor helps keep noise down to a quiet roar.
QBedding tatami style bedding also comes in queen size. The items are sold in combination or separately. Visit QBedding
