Higher dietary bioflavonoid intake improves odds of healthy aging (Weekly Essentials of Health from Usana)

Originally published November 5, 2014 Personal Note from Ekayani: My grandfather Bernando LaPallo has for decades insisted on the importance of eating berries. His personal favorite is blueberries or star fruit as the Natives called them. It is nice to see this scientific paper validate for todays audience what he already knew. Thanks to Usana Health Sciences for continuing to provide these much needed reports. Higher dietary bioflavonoid intake improves odds of healthy aging At a Glance A new study published online has found that adults with a higher intake of flavonoids (oranges, berries, onions, celery) during midlife have a greater likelihood of healthier aging past 70 years of age. Read more about this research below. In population based studies, diets higher in phytonutrients such as flavonoids have been associated with lower risk of developing several degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. Although there may be a strong biological rationale for a role of flavonoids in healthy aging, there has been limited research in this area specifically. In a new study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers examined the intake of major subclasses of flavonoids at midlife with the prevalence of healthy aging. Healthy aging was defined by the researchers as surviving to older ages (70+ years), free of major chronic disease and maintaining good cognitive, physical and mental health. The study included 13,818 women in their late 50s from the Nurses’ Health Study (enrolled between 1984-1986) with no major chronic disease. The women provided information on many aspects of aging an average of 15 years later. Food frequency questionnaires were used to determine intake of six major flavonoid subclasses in midlife. A total of 1,517 (11%) women met the criteria for healthy aging. Compared to women in the lowest 20% of intake, women with the highest 20% intake of several subclasses of flavonoids at midlife had a greater likelihood of healthy aging. Specifically, women with the highest intakes of flavones, flavanones, anthocyanins and flavonols had greater odds of healthy aging than those with the lowest intakes. In a separate analysis of each component of healthy aging, higher flavone and flavanone intakes were significantly associated with better mental health and physical function. The results of this study indicate that a higher intake of flavonoids at midlife, specifically flavones (parsley, celery, citrus peels), flavanones (oranges, orange juice), anthocyanins (berries) and flavanols (onions, broccoli) are associated with greater odds of health and wellbeing in adults surviving to older ages. New e Book! Bernando LaPallo's " Beyond 100" Shares Tips on Living Well

Grampa feeling great & looking sharp at 112

Beyond 100 - How to Live Well Into Your Second Century is an E Book

My grandfather has never let changes slow him down. He just keeps rolling with change although the marked exception would be his diet and exercise regimen that he has been following without change for the past century at the request of my great grand father.
"So many things have changed and more changes coming," he has told me on more than one occasion referring to the innumerable changes he has witnessed in his own century plus of living. From telephones to cell phones, to paper backs to iPads, technology has changed from the "ice boxes" that morphed into refrigerators that we use today without even thinking about it. No one is hauling large blocks of ice up staircases to keep food fresh or bothering to empty a catchment pan for the ice that has melted. Horse drawn buggies, trolly cars, and airplanes beginning with the first Trans Atlantic flight by Lindy and commemorated with a dance "The Lindy Hop" that Grampa was tickled to see in Harlem during his June 2013 visit to New York as part of the advance promotion for this book is part of the phantasmagoria that rules the world it seems. Which brings me to his e- Book; It is now available on Apple iTunes in the iBooks section worldwide in English. You will find more of his personal take on principles that have not changed for him when it comes to taking care of his health which he believes is his first priority and should be yours as well. Bernando says he is looking forward to the print version coming out soon so more people can access it but sagely notes "these things take time."

Special National Geographic Q & A

As an added treat please enjoy this Questions & Answers feature in National Geographic News Watch conducted by David Braun where Bernando demonstrates what a sharp mind he still has. Be sure to tell your family and friends! In a world struggling with a disconnection to their bodies and food they put in it, Bernando's simple and straight forward approach will serve as an inspiration that we can live well into all years of our life if we treat the body as the temple it is. God Blessed us but we need to take advantage of those blessings right?

Kate Manning sang like a bird  Photo S Sheddy

The Champagne Riot NY put on a stellar show for the conclusion of the New York leg of Bernando's112th Birthday & Book Tour on June 6, 2013 at the downtown club The Slipper Room which boasts an adorable gilt framed stage. Here is a recap of what you missed to try and give you the feeling of what fun we had! Personally, I couldn't stop dancing and the time just flew by. I wrote this thank you to the group which summarizes my feelings. The performers that night were the husband and wife team Jesse Gelber (piano, musical direction) and Kate Manning (vocals), Gin Minsky (tap dancer), burlesque artists Jezebel Express, Evelyn Vinyl, acrobatic showgirl Miss Kae Burke from the House of YES, Kevin Dunn on drums, Mike Hashim on sax and Master of Ceremonies Dandy Wellington who recently appeared on Page Six for his role in the opening night festivities for the film launch of The Great Gatsby. This band does not disappoint so give yourself a treat and beat it to see them asap at The Cutting Room July 20.

Dear Champagne Riot New York -
Thank you for the marvelous show you put on Thursday night for Bernando! It was stellar and classy! How perfect and lovely The Champagne Riot is! Bernando was transfixed watching and enjoying every moment, moving along to the music! The music fit him like a glove and it was sheer pleasure to see him transported to his younger days of the jazz age. "That guy can really play piano"!
The trio was HOT and on the mark!
Evelyn Vinyl
And speaking of hot Miss Evelyn Vinyl you are gorgeous and I heard that more than once! Kate my dear you were really on FIRE Thursday night and we loved every single song you covered. So funny, so witty we wanted more!

Jezebel Express watch out for curves! photo S Sheddy
When it was Jezebel's turn Bernando said "Take it easy baby take it easy"! Gin Minsky what a delight you are! I personally loved your attention to detail with glittering knee high socks that matched your umbrella. Emerald Green as you spun out of one costume to another until you were right down to your tassles. Classic!
Gin Minsky taps her way into our hearts Photo Shell Sheddy
Mike your playing has an élan and we hung on every note as you soared! Thank you Sir for the ride!
Dandy and Kevin - number 721 and 428 very good and looking sharp as always!  :)
Jesse stand stands for Joy! I am so glad you got to wield your magic on a real set of piano keys. It was so much fun watching you having fun.

The Lovely Kae Burke poses with Bernando Photo S Sheddy
And SURPRISE! Kae Burke from the House of YES! appears out of nowhere, the magical circus queen dressed like one of Lee Chappell's cupcakes thrilling the audience with worry and suspense slithering up and down white fabric ropes. You were a VISION  and I was so proud and delighted! Thank you for saying YES!

Last but no least, thanks to Lee Chappell for baking and bringing all those cupcakes making Bernando's birthday wish as he blew out his candles delicious! Everyone in the room had a treat!! Lee, thank you for making my acquaintance with The CRNY
Making a wish! Photo  Shell Sheddy
My only regret is that I sang so badly! Next time on Bernando's 113th I insist on a run through. Hopefully everyone forgave me. I wanted to do it well but I guess I just had a bit too much on my mind. I hope you will reserve your judgment on me. I admire you all so. The Slipper Room is a perfect venue for you and I do hope you go back! Soon!
Again many, many thanks for the conclusion of Bernando's Birthday & Book Tour  week in New York made as fabulous and memorable at it's conclusion as it was at it's beginning with the Yankees!

Let's Talk About The Yankees - Bernando Remembers The Highlanders & The Babe

Bernando  LaPallo 112 Lifelong Yankees Fan

Bernando LaPallo is turning 112 Years Old this summer and is still a diehard Yankees fan more than a century after first seeing them in Hilltop Park in Manhattan. Born in 1901, Bernando was only 9 or 10 years old when his father made the trip with is son from Philadelphia to New York to see The Highlanders. It was a gesture that any affectionate father would do if he could to please a boy who was always chanting "The Yankees are gonna win! The Yankees are gonna win!" His father Bernando LaPallo Sr. remarked that the Yankees should give him a sign that he was a Yankees Fan. About a century later Bernando is still a Yankees fan and though he hasn't gotten that sign yet he is still hopefull as he travels to New York this week for a string of appearances for his new book. He says the seat they had that day sitting opposite first base is still his preferred view. Back in 1910 to 1911 bleacher seats cost fifty cents and were made out of wood.
Babe Ruth whose popularity built Yankee Stadium

"That was something else. It was a sunshiney day. I remember that much." He also remembers Babe Ruth shaking his hand and saying to him "My youngest fan." For a kid who would later see Babe Ruth's popularity build Yankee Stadium known as The House That Ruth Built  that would remain an indelible memory that he would cherish.Bernando says he remembers everything clearly from 1927 on and fans know that 1927 was the year that The Babe led his team to victory winning The World Series with a lineup known as "Murderer's Row". Other memories include the rivalry between the Yankees and The Brooklyn Dodgers when Jackie Robinson stole home base to beat the Yankees in the World Series in 1955. As much as Bernando appreciated that Jackie broke the color barrier in sports,  he admits that he was till rooting for the Yankees that day in September.

Bernando's Wisdom On Sea Salt and Asthma

My grandfather Bernando LaPallo has told me many a tale of his time as a Merchant Marine during World War 2. From two near misses with death escaping two separate bombings including that of a bus that slammed the door in his face while he was trying to get back to his ship in port during an air raid, life at sea was quite the adventure. He worked as a chef on board during the war being a trained  graduate from La Sorbonne's School of Culinary Arts in Paris, France in 1928. A creature of good habits, one of his favorite pastimes to tell is his daily intake of "fresh salt air. Today at 111 his whole body still goes into a visible state of  relaxation just remembering what it felt like.  "It's good for your lungs!" he says. Recently on the Billionaires Mindset Forum he was giving a talk on the 46 Reasons Why Water Is Important for the health of the body and the benefits of sea salt.

While salt has been much maligned it's important to understand that Sea Salt is rich in minerals that the body requires such as iodine. Iodine is just one of many trace minerals critical to the health of the immune system. Dr. Myron Wentz points out that disruptive and even deadly chemicals found in common household cleaning supplies, Rx drugs, anti- depressants, cookware, nasal sprays, antacids, fertilizers and even baking flour (yikes!) contain bromide, fluoride, chloride can be counteracted with optimal amounts of iodine. Eating adequate amounts of sea vegetables and sea food help protect your body from health hazards such as diabetes, obesity, various cancers and fibromylagia. Fluoride retards fetal brain development and is unfortunately found in most municipal water supplies, toothpaste and in our non stick cookware. Lately,  I have been horrified by Duane Reade chain drug stores selling fluoride water targeting infants! Infants are the most vulnerable and should not have their small bodies flooded with poisons that will damage their development. Fluoride contrary to popular folklore destroys teeth by destroying the enamel. Read the label on your fluoride toothpaste and notice the poison warning label. Children under three are to be taken to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped in case of ingestion.

Asthma and Sea Salt

One miracle of sea salt is it's ability to provide relief from asthma's attacks. The next time you feel an attack coming on drink two glasses of water first. Then place one teaspoon of sea salt of the tongue. Leave it on the tongue for a minute and then wash down with a third glass of water. One lady reported that after trying this simple approach  with her son the boy was joyfully jumping up and down able to breathe freely. This poor lady had been taking him to doctors for years to find a cure for the childs asthma only resulted in an empty wallet, many ineffectual prescriptions and no improvement.  Working a weekly seaside walk to breathe in fresh salt air can only be beneficial. Note that even optimal supplements like USANA are restricted by the FDA from adding the needed amounts of iodine to products to reverse the results of deficiencies. This is a problem that will be reversed sooner rather than later as the public becomes more aware of the benefits of the bounty and healing properties the natural world offers and demands it.
