Postcards from Summer

The Ferry at Sayville, LI

Summer is over and as usual way too soon. Ice cream, less clothing, longer days and time outside  are what I love about the season. This summer was one of expanded vistas because my Usana business took me all over the place. This was a direct result of getting involved in the lives of my team members that live and work in 3 different states. It was full of adventures, scenic drives and a few mishaps. (Spilling chocolate nutrimeal all over my white sweatshirt inside my bag anyone?) Aside from any rain storms I was caught in or buses I missed, I persevered pushing through with the support of my sponsor. It took me to a lot of wonderful places both externally and inside the lives of others. Without wanting to sound corny, it was really a healing journey listening to dreams. Giving voice to the restorative properties of nature and nutrition I know I did touch lives giving the persons I encountered the courage to kick medications, lose weight, get on a healthier program of daily living and overcome any fears they had about being a business owner. Far from being the scary, cold and callous world of traditional business, this USANA business is fun!  Why? Well just look at the photos! Being outside and meeting new people while sharing the wisdom of Dr. Wentz is my absolute favorite thing in the world. I have been able to marry my love of travel, exploration, wellness and public speaking and mentorship in one. Thanks to those who drove for hours. (You know who you are!)

Fire Island The Pines

I have the most photos from Fire Island being that we made it out several times. Nature walks, jumping in the pool, dipping in the ocean, window shopping, meeting wonderful wellness professionals during sunny days and of course sharing samples of healthy alternatives and ways to keep energy up on a resort that is known for non stop parties and very limited food options was a joy. Rev3 and various takes on Nutrimeal shakes were a huge hit here! We also connected with organizations like Cycle for the Cause that we never would have otherwise.

Rosehips and Connecticut Lakes

Rosehips grow along the seaside in Ct. These were huge
Nells Lake The best office ever
A lovely and rapid train ride to Connecticut I got off at Bridgeport. I was taken to this lovely lake where I conducted a one on one outdoor business orientation. How's that for an office setting? Rosehips were plentiful and grow abundantly. I came back to Brooklyn  with a large bag of sea shells that I mixed in the garden soil. The East Coast is truly a lovely watery jungle with low farmlands. Riding through the towns of Guilford, Strattford, New London and back down to New Haven with a customary stop at Pepe's Pizza was perfect. Pools, pool, pooches and beaches made it feel like summer. Thanks.

Ice Cream &  Light Houses

Ice Cream stop in the Cape!
Classic! Light House on the Cape
Cape Cod is one of the loveliest places in the world with waterways that ring around the landscape like necklaces. I learned about the fragility of the ecosystem there, enjoyed one of the largest ice cream cones I have ever had in my life and was shown unparrelled hospitality. Beach trips and dining by the marina in good company have made for great memories and a desire to go back as often as possible! Donna Sullivan and Meagan Perry are doing great things up there!

London Games Garden Party Brooklyn Style

Vanessa Soto, LMT showed us how to stretch
USANA sponsored athlete Conor Dwyer placed during our party!
Our set up for Sense
We threw our own London Olympic Games party and invited about half a dozen over for a RESET presentation, health consultations and Sense mini facials which are always a hit! Vanessa Soto, LMT stopped in and answered questions on the best time to stretch for the avid runners in the group. It was great having Vanessa and her mother stop by and give their testimony. Our gathering was tri- lingual with Spanish , English and Chinese speakers present. Imagine how thrilled we were to hear that the USANA sponsored swimmer Conor Dwyer who went on to win Gold placed for the games during our event! It made it all much more real for us. My kichari dish got nods of approval and samples were appreciated as being good! If your looking for a departure from chalky tasting protein shakes we've got your number.  I covered hundreds of miles and thank goodness that I had my Healthpak, nutrition bars, Sense, and Nutrimeals to keep me going strong while looking as  fresh as a daisy. Here is to creating more valuable memories while supporting  and not destroying nature. This is the business for the 21st century that enters into an easy going conversation that brings fun into the picture. All I can say is I am looking forward to more!
How was your summer?

Water Let's Get it Back 99% Governor Cuomo Listen Up!

In a recent update from Water Defense the headline read that Governor Cuomo
is changing his tune regarding poisoning our water supply by allowing fracking into our watershed which I hope means he is finally starting to realize means the water supply for the entire Easter Seaboard. Last year I was involved in a musical spiritual initiative called the We Love Water Tour sponsored by The Green Bus founded by Charlie Gonzalez. There were several versions made so go ahead break out that ole guitar, harmonica, cello , saxophone, triangle and do your expansion. Raymond Norwood the songs creator has made it totally creative commons style to take lyrics and expand upon them they way Meagn Perry did or like SRIKIRTAN the kirtan style group. Here is a reggae flavored version with AzItIz from New Orleans, Truth Now, Srikala the Remixologist and Raymond himself singing virtual duets with crew! Please share and retweet!

Razor Burn - How to Avoid it with Sense Beautiful Science

Razor burn. It's painful and it's ugly. Todays post is short and sweet with a few tips for the fellows on how to avoid this common problem while pampering their skin the easy way. Guys also have sensitive skin and that's why I recommend  Sense. Compounded with irritating products it can make shaving for them painful. Here are 4 easy steps to change the game.

1. Exfoliate

Dead skin and ingrown hairs are the chief culprits in contributing to razor burn. Preparing your skin before you shave is critical. The Sense Rice Bran polisher has papaya enzymes that help gently lift off dead skin. The gentle rice barn beadlets finish the job without damaging the epidermis while adding Vitaman E to heal. Try leaving it on for a few extra minutes after gently massaging all over your face and neck. Rinse off.

2. Shave Soap Free

Next use the Sense Nourishing Body Gel. It's soap free  (and paraben free) so won't clog your pores. It contains botanicals that help protect from free radical damage. My friend Ray uses it all the time and it has come to replace his traditional shaving cream.  It has a great citrus scent so you won't have to worry about smelling sweet. You can also try using the Nourishing Conditioner in place of shaving cream as well. Be sure to use a clean razor and clean it often during the shaving process. Leaving it in the shower can become a home for bacteria. Store it in a dry place.

3. Tone Don't Burn Your Skin
Hydrating Toner

Instead of using irritating after shave that can sting and burn, be good to your skin and soothe it with Sense Hydrating Toner. It contains green tea and grape seed extract to soothe as well as clary sage that helps bring the skin back to a balanced ph and closing enlarged pores. Whether your skin is oily or dry and flaky,  it will help your shaving experience over the long run.

4. Moisturize and Protect
Our Daytime Protective Emulsion with SPF 15

Serum Intensive for Oily Skin

Now that you have shaved your skin and removed some layers in the process, protect that handsome face of yours with either the Daytime Protective Emulsion.  If your skin tends to be oily  use either the Serum Intensive or Perfecting Essence. It's important to protect your face from the pollution that we encounter on a daily basis in the form of smoke, smog and even stress. A well protected and  hydrated skin is important to keep diseases at bay that can enter the body through openings.

Preventing Cancer - Good to Know Sanoviv A Oasis of Healing

Sanoviv Medical Institute

It seems every other conversation I have with someone involves breast cancer. Either they have it or are dealing with a mother, sister, aunt or friend that is having another round with it. Today I am offering some information and insights that although staring us in the face may not have registered as triggers for these disease which has reached epidemic proportions. As bad as it is having 1 in 3 persons struggling with this, I concur with  Dr. Christiane Northrup that simply removing breasts and our reproductive systems is not actual care of the female organism. We need to look deeper ladies and the very life of our communities and children depends on us coming to grips with the underlying issues that create the suitable environment for cancer to exist. The purpose of this post is to bring your attention to the causes of the cancer, some other methods which have been clinically proven to heal and the oasis of Sanoviv Medical Institute a state of the art facility that opened it's doors in 2000. These description have been taken from the pages of Sanoviv as the language is so eloquent. I have also included this video from the president of Sanoviv Elaine Pace a cancer survivor herself. Feel free to scroll through the videos and find hope, relief and even joy in this wonderful resource.

 Triggers - Insights from Sanoviv

Never before did the human body have to deal with such an amount of triggers that can induce cancer as we do now, these include:
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Radiation exposure
  • Electromagnetic fields
  • Microwave emissions
  • Environmental pollutants like chemicals, petrochemicals, pesticides, herbicides, chlorine byproducts, fluoride, asbestos, fiberglass and other countless toxins in our food, water and air.
  • Hormone usage
  • Hormones in food especially animal food
  • Drugs
  • Free radicals
  • Nutritional deficiencies from processed foods, depleted soil, artificial sweeteners, sodas, excessive coffee
  • Chronic dehydration
  • Toxic teeth (mercury fillings),
  • Childhood vaccines
  • Infectious agents like viruses, bacteria or fungus.

Alternative Breast Cancer Treatment

"Breast Cancer is not a random misfortune in most cases. We now know that this is a multi-faceted disease, and there are various ways of fighting it. Conventional approaches such as chemotherapy and radiation cannot be used continually because of their high toxicity, and continual application could kill the person even before cancer would. The side effects of these treatments, such as immune suppression and secondary malnutrition, worsen the prognosis as cancer cells can then grow rapidly. This opens the door to an abundant field of alternative, holistic and integrative breast cancer treatment options at Sanoviv.
The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries have failed to produce more than a handful of useful therapies for breast cancer, however, many people still assume that the only options for treating Breast Cancer are the mainstream therapies of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Our approach is unique as it combines holistic, alternative and integrative proven therapies that are usually not considered by conventional doctors for breast cancer.
Here is an overview of some of the most effective breast cancer treatments we have found for Cancer. Our objective is to support your own defenses, kill cancer cells, detoxify your body and improve your overall well being.

  • One effective breast cancer treatment is to starve cancer cells of foods that will promote their multiplication. At Sanoviv we serve 100% organic food. Based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we believe in using the energy in food to promote health and to help your body heal. Part of our program includes learning healthy eating habits and recognizing unhealthy eating and cooking patterns. This program is provided by professional certified Nutritionists.

  • Immunotherapy is based on biological immune system modifiers/stimulators, medications and biological vaccine treatments. It provides an integrative treatment to modify, modulate and stimulate your body's regular immune system function and mechanisms, so that it can recognize and eliminate cancer cells.

  • The detoxification pathways of the human body are a network of enzymes and enzyme systems; they help protect cells from reactive oxygen species such as free radicals. Enzymes work to detoxify a wide range of cancer-causing chemicals which may have implications in the reduction of cancer rates. Part of breast cancer is toxicity, therefore eliminating the exposure to toxins and encouraging the detoxification systems of the body to be at their best is a potent strategy for healing. Also, clinical trials in the use of enzyme therapy have shown that enzyme combinations can mitigate side effects from chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, contributing to improvement in the patient's quality of life.

  • Tumor hypoxia or lack of oxygen in tumor cells has proven to be a factor for poor prognosis in a cancer patient. Cancer cells cannot survive in an oxygenated environment. Oxygen therapy is an alternative or holistic cancer treatment used to help fight breast cancer cells and reduce side effects from conventional cancer treatments. Many researchers think lack of oxygen in our cells is one of the primary causes of cancer. An impressive variety of new ways to introduce oxygen into the body is emerging. Flooding cells with oxygen may retard the growth of cancer cells or even help to return them to normal and maintain healthy cells at their normal functioning level.

  • Holistic and alternative cancer treatment has relied on nutrition and supplementation to aid in
healing cancer for years. At Sanoviv, nutraceutical supplementation provides essential minerals, vitamins and antioxidants to improve nutritional deficiencies, fight free radicals, promote detoxification and support a effective biochemical balance in your body.

  • Modern Homeopathy known as Homotoxicology offers a holistic cancer treatment to aid in the fight against breast cancer, as progressive deterioration of the body's own cleansing system leads to gradual compromise of the defensive mechanisms. Reversing this process will have great value in the fight against cancer cells, helping the body recapture its lost biological ability to compete against the invasive cells.

  • Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive, positive mind and spirit will help the breast cancer patient's fight against cancer. A constant pattern of anger, resentment and bitterness can put the body into a stressful environment. At Sanoviv you will learn from our integrative health care team how to promote a loving and forgiving mind, body and spirit, creating a positive physiological impact to your body through psychospiritual support.

  • Exercise is also very important to aid blood circulation and oxygenation. Exercise programs are tailored to suit the individual's needs and abilities. Practices such as Yoga are very beneficial, as it has demonstrated mental and physical benefits for cancer patients in several medical studies.

  • An overview of Sanoviv's breast cancer treatment also includes phytotherapy, thymic peptide therapy, probiotic therapy, blockade of adhesion molecules and hyperthermia, among other individualized medical treatments designed to restore the gastrointestinal, liver and lymphatic system, as well as the hormonal, circulatory, renal and immunological functions.

Grand Opening Party! How to Launch Your Usana Business

Towering over Enilda at her Grand Opening Party

Having a Grand Opening Party is a great way to launch any business and especially your USANA business. Invite guests to celebrate your new venture and get people talking about your business right away!  You don't need to rent an expensive venue. It can be done right out of your own home. Unless you are a complete recluse, you have family and friends that you can invite over to learn about what your new venture is all about while sampling products. Generating sales, taking orders and providing an insight as to your motivation for starting your wellness business is liberating for you and is an example for others. Fun and easy here are a few tips I picked up at Enilda Rosas Grand Opening Party over Labor Day weekend.
Vanessa holds a bouquet of fresh wildflowers for the occasion

1. Get Dressed Up! It's a party and it's your grand opening party! Wear something a bit nicer than jeans and show your guests that they are in for something special that is important to you.
2. Have A Program. After greeting your guests let them know why they are there and the purpose of the gathering. Introduce USANA Health Sciences and it's mission. Give some background on Dr. Myron Wentz the founder.  Putting the event into context for people lets them know what to expect.
3. Give your own testimonial as to why you have gotten involved be it health or wealth or both. This will be meaningful to them. Remember these are people that know and love you and want you to be successful. Let them know how they can do that but keep it short. 35 minutes is usually enough. You can always break up into smaller groups or do 1 to 1's

4. Introduce the Product Line. USANA is broken up into three different categories:
Nutritional supplements for ALL Ages, Diet and Energy and Personal & Body Care. It's impressive!

5. Let them know about the purity of the products, the potency guarantee, NSF and GMP certifications, the athlete guarantee, partnerships formed with LPI, TOSH, Dr. Oz, Boston University, Sanoviv and that we are an FDA regulated facility. This establishes the fact that USANA is a solid science based manufacturer on the leading edge of advancements in nutritional science for all people. While you are at it let them know USANA has been in business for 20 years paying associates weekly for their efforts.

6. Serve USANA foods alongside any other dishes you have. Set up a Smoothie Bar so guests can sample the Dutch Chocolate, French Vanilla and Strawberry Nutrimeal drinks. Give them a Rev3 iced tea by adding slices of lemon or lime. Serve nutrition bars as hors d'oeuvres and be sure to show off our newest offering the vegan friendly gluten free Go Nuts N Berries bar. Cut them up into slices along with peanut butter crunch, chocolate fusion and oatmeal raisin bar and serve. A Sense Beauty bar is always a hit!

7. Have  Fun!
USANA is all about you and how you want to fit the products into your lifestyle. At Enilda's the 96th Birthday party of her mother was also observed.  Be personal and be personable. Let people know how this can be an easy solution to life's challenges. Be the positive we can get it done go to person. Being a beacon of hope in someone's life is priceless.
Have Fun!

Moonlighting - Overcoming Fears & Accomplishing Goals

A couple of chairs that faced the moon
The last full moon a friend invited me to do a full moon meditation. The inspiration for this came from Tom Kenyon , sound healer and his work that he calls the Sphere of All Possibilties.
You can read in detail here the steps and thought process.
My first thoughts were "Why?"  I recognize that the Lord manifests through His creation but it seems so many times the Creator is left out of these observances. I was wary. That being said I remembered that in Bhagavad Gita As It Is, the Blessed Lord says that the sun and the moon are His eyes. "Well",  I thought to myself, "He will be watching me then and being conscious of that I won't forget Him. I want to remember where my blessings come from." Two chairs were pulled up in the backyard and my friend gave a description of the steps to be taken to actually cease struggling with life by tapping into the life force that we have a literal connection to whether male or female.  In or out of the womb it can be felt. I had encountered this premise before during yoga meditations  by tapping into the Prana or via Chinese medicine which speaks of Qi. Regardless of the language used,  reconnecting to the energetic life giving force of the Universe is similar to the fetus connected to the life energy our mother's provide via the umbilical cord. It made sense. While I can't say I have experienced the dimensions that this gentleman Tom Kenyon has, I did notice on the third day of practice that a very real sensation of fear came forth from my solar plexus. That was a surprise! Is this what I want to emit and create?  I consider myself a confident person and able to do anything I set my mind to however there was no denying that I had felt fear concerning my next set of goals that I had solemnly sworn to achieve in September.

Peeling Back the Layers

And so as our mothers were pregnant with us,  so we are pregnant with ideas. The key seems to be
1. Honesty about where our ideas or beliefs about ourselves really are and not just what we say with our head.
2. Having taken self inventory getting down to the brass tacks of getting out of our own way.

The steps to doing this are not hard but the point is to do them and overcome the resistance to doing them. You know  - "The mind can be the best friend or the worst enemy of the soul."  It does what is bidden and depending what you have been practicing all your life that is what comes into play at critical moments. Diamond Director and Zumba instructor Carmen Marshall also stresses that personal development is very much a part of realizing ones hopes and dreams. She is living a gorgeous life in Bali and is living her intercontinental dream.

I Can't vs I Can

Dr. Sharon Melnick 's tag line is "Helping Successful and Talented People Get Out of Their Own Way" She shared a funny story about a self dialog while she was attempting to water ski on one leg something she hadn't done in 30 years. Feeling wobbly her initial self talk was the reinforcement of How wobbly she was feeling and How she was going to fail. Being a coach and a practitioner of her philosophy,  she quickly changed the self sabotaging babble with self confidence building dialog coupled with a clear vision of what she wanted to see happen for herself.  She calls this the I Can't vs I Can talk
"That picture in my head and voice of self trust showed me I could stop trying so hard and let my body assume a natural position that its done before. They guided me to decide that I was going to do it, and helped me to do so."  Dr. Sharon Melnick

Finally, I offer you this quote by Abraham Hicks who have done much to set these notions rolling forward over the past two decades in a language that is easily understandable. This quote seems to sum it up for me. It's not just what I want to see happen but what I believe CAN happen right down to my very core. One of those cores is my own  solar plexus which attaches me to the umbilical cord of the Universe who graciously and lovingly provides strength and inspiration all the time. I have always thought God was kind. So kind in fact that whatever I repeatedly tell Him I want He will fulfill. As one minister I met had on her business card  "Pray Attention".

By Default, I Could Have Attracted Unwanted Relationships... Many of the relationships or experiences you have attracted you would not have deliberately attracted if you had been doing it on purpose, but much of your attraction is not done by deliberate intent, but rather by default. . . . It is important to understand that you get what you think about, whether you want it or not. And chronic thoughts about unwanted things invite, or ask for, matching experiences. The Law of Attraction makes it so.

Omega 3 Surprise - Purslane

A bundle of purslane

In Brooklyn there is a large farmers market adajacent to the Brooklyn Public Library and smack in front of the Prospect Park entrance. One sunny Saturday I spotted purslane due to the fact that there was a bold statement on a handwritten sign that said "PURSLANE - 3 Times Higher in Omega 3"
There was no clinical study attached yet I trusted that the farmer knew of what he spoke. It clearly got my attention as I am always looks for new ways to add Omega 3's and purslane is something I see rarely. Although I use olive oil liberally and am experimenting with chia seeds, the idea of a green plant being a rich source of Omega 3's meant that I could sautee it in my preferred oil of choice and get my greens and the 3's. Wikipedia had this (and much more!) to say about purslane.
Considered a weed by some knowledge of it's extraordinary properties show it is anything but useless.
Portulaca olercea in latin
"Purslane contains more omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid in particular[4]) than any other leafy vegetable plant. Research published by Artemis P. Simopoulos states that Purslane has 0.01 mg/g of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). This is an extraordinary amount of EPA for a land-based vegetable source. EPA is an Omega-3 fatty acid found mostly in fish, some algae, and flax seeds.[5] It also contains vitamins (mainly vitamin A, vitamin C, and some vitamin B and carotenoids), as well as dietary minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, and iron. Also present are two types of betalain alkaloid pigments, the reddish betacyanins (visible in the coloration of the stems) and the yellow betaxanthins (noticeable in the flowers and in the slight yellowish cast of the leaves). Both of these pigment types are potent antioxidants and have been found to have antimutagenic properties in laboratory studies."
