Let's Talk About The Yankees - Bernando Remembers The Highlanders & The Babe

Bernando  LaPallo 112 Lifelong Yankees Fan

Bernando LaPallo is turning 112 Years Old this summer and is still a diehard Yankees fan more than a century after first seeing them in Hilltop Park in Manhattan. Born in 1901, Bernando was only 9 or 10 years old when his father made the trip with is son from Philadelphia to New York to see The Highlanders. It was a gesture that any affectionate father would do if he could to please a boy who was always chanting "The Yankees are gonna win! The Yankees are gonna win!" His father Bernando LaPallo Sr. remarked that the Yankees should give him a sign that he was a Yankees Fan. About a century later Bernando is still a Yankees fan and though he hasn't gotten that sign yet he is still hopefull as he travels to New York this week for a string of appearances for his new book. He says the seat they had that day sitting opposite first base is still his preferred view. Back in 1910 to 1911 bleacher seats cost fifty cents and were made out of wood.
Babe Ruth whose popularity built Yankee Stadium

"That was something else. It was a sunshiney day. I remember that much." He also remembers Babe Ruth shaking his hand and saying to him "My youngest fan." For a kid who would later see Babe Ruth's popularity build Yankee Stadium known as The House That Ruth Built  that would remain an indelible memory that he would cherish.Bernando says he remembers everything clearly from 1927 on and fans know that 1927 was the year that The Babe led his team to victory winning The World Series with a lineup known as "Murderer's Row". Other memories include the rivalry between the Yankees and The Brooklyn Dodgers when Jackie Robinson stole home base to beat the Yankees in the World Series in 1955. As much as Bernando appreciated that Jackie broke the color barrier in sports,  he admits that he was till rooting for the Yankees that day in September.

Vitamin D Are You Getting Enough? The Myth of Summer in the Big City

Vitamin D is the "sunshine vitamin" Are you getting enough?

Vitamin D is really a hormone that assists your immune systems optimal functioning.Manufactured by your body when the sun hits your skin cancers, depression, influenza, absorption of the trace minerals magnesium and calcium for strong bones, the formation of healthy babies, the lowering of hypertension in black Americans and the increased speed of recovery post workout are just some of the many benefits proven by science. Although getting enough sunshine may have fallen in the realm of lifestyle in the past, currently 70% of the US population is deficient including infants. It seems important with the summer months coming on to note that summer does not guarantee you will be getting enough D. Why? This has to do with lifestyle and for most who are chained to an office job that means spending 8 hours and upward daily indoors and away from the sunshine. If you live in a big city like New York, sunshine is something you appreciate looking at from inside your office. Though fortunate to be in a city that gets more sun than many on the globe, spending time in the sun remains a fantasy for most. The average workers day in the Big Apple looks like this;

Your D as in Deficient Day

1. Get up in the dark before sunrise to get ready for work.
2. Walk to subway or train for ten minutes before you enter the dark subway for an hour commute.

3. Emerge from subway and get 2 minutes of sunshine at the coffee vendor on the street before you head up to work. You are wearing long sleeves or bundled up so there's no chance of getting any sun though maybe on your face.

4. Work in closed office (where there may or may not be windows) under fluorescent lights all day. Sit in front of computer screen.

5. After work off you go to a dark bar or restaurant to relax over drinks with friends or head back home for an hour or longer commute. When you get home it's dark. And that ladies and gentleman was you exposure to the sunshine on a daily basis for most of the year.

Be Deliberate and Supplement

With the scare tactics used to keep the majority out of the sun while slathering sunblock that prevents your body from producing this hormone naturally it's no wonder we are as a population suffering from a lack of D. A moderate amount of sunshine to the tune of 30 minutes daily is good for you. Supplementation all year round for those who are not making a concerted effort to get outside or cannot get outside due to lifestyle constraints on a daily basis is recommended. According to new ground breaking studies by Usana Health Sciences 2000 IU per day are preferable to the old 400 IU per day previously considered adequate. Notes from Women's Health Issues & Supplementation Part 2

Greetings! This is a second post from a repeat webinar class led by Dr. Ladd McNamara, a board certified OBGYN who is an author of The Power of Cellular Nutrition, an expert on bio identical hormones, a gynecological surgeon who has delivered hundreds of babies during his career. He is a father of a beautiful 15 year old girl and is a former member of USANA Health Sciences Scientific Advisory Panel. Today he spends his time lecturing about health concerns and the positive role supplementation plays in supporting health. The first talk he gave via the web on the topic of Women's Health had 750 attendees listening in and learning on the topics of a broad spectrum of  issues. Dr. McNamara covered Puberty, Peri-menopause, Pap smears, Osteoporosis, PCOS, complications that can arise in Pregnancy, Gestational Diabetes, Breast Health, Cervical Health, PMS and much more. The takeaway for me was that womens health is manageable with proper nutrition.

Seeing Through The Lens of Nutritional Deficiency

Revealing was the uncovering of the old adage "it run's in the family" which too often signals  a resignation towards conditions that may arise. As women give birth to 100% of the population, the knowledge that there is indeed a  link to intergenerational predispositions to disease as seen through the lens of nutritional deficiencies is absolutely vital. This understanding is critical. Vitamins and minerals are the stuff that our cells are made of. Lack of optimal amounts has a cascade effect to our bones, reproductive organs, hormonal function, brain function, breast health and yes our children and even grand children. But why and how? Fascinating and empowering, the understanding that the links to issues even within one lifetime of one woman depend on the strength of her immune system. Indeed, it is the immune system in every area of the body that is important. The female body never stops functioning. The key as to whether or not is functioning well is taking an educated look at symptoms that examines options other than simply removing body parts that are also needed for a woman to live a long healthy life. Explore that which has been little talked about. Here I offer the highlights of what I was able to absorb. Indeed, the health issues of a woman are a complex and sophisticated thing that requires awareness, love and attention. I hope this is helpful to you. I direct you to Dr. McNamara's website where you can find more resources here

The Seeds of Osteoporosis Begin in Puberty

The connection between puberty and menopause was an eye opener for me. The importance of your girls getting optimal amounts of a calcium phosphate mineral complex has a direct impact on the strength of the bones in later years during menopause. I always had thought of bones as somehow being static after a teens growth spurt. In fact, the cells in the bones are living with a constant turnover with a 20% loss of bone mass after menopause. Collagen, the protein we associate with  youthful skin, is also a component of a woman's bones and help keep them elastic or bendable rather then brittle. Collagen production is greatly aided with Vitamin C.  Falls that occur due to brittle femurs around the hip can be avoided or minimized by getting Peak Bone Density. Peak Bone Density is set up during puberty. The teen years are a critical time for bone development setting the stage for the strength of bones throughout a woman's life. A bone density scan will reveal the density of bone mass. Dr. McNamara recommends Usana's Active Calcium or BodyRox chewable for teens and adults because of the optimal amounts it has and it's superior delivery system. It's highly  bioavailable which means these nutrients are absorbed the digestive tract within 35 minutes. I know of a woman in her sixties who would fracture a bone in her feet every time she tripped on something. After taking Active Calcium for two months the next time she tripped she had no fractures. This is a powerful reminder that keeping up on your supplementation can reverse a condition like osteoporosis that would otherwise be spiraling downward. The body is a machine. Replace what you use and your vehicle will run right.

Heart Health Migraines Hot Flashes

Dr. McNamara broke it down like this;

4 Tablets per day of USANA's Active Calcium provide 800 mg of calcium, 400 mg of Magnesium, 400 IU of Vitamin D which is essential for proper absorption, 9 mg of silicon, 1.32 mg of boron and 60mg of Vitamin K to aid in bone formation. Other purposes aside from the health of the bones are healthy heart, metabolism that will turn food into energy, and prevent migraines and the cramping of muscles. Without these the arteries constrict making blood flow poor to the brain and muscles. Magnesium is the "keys to car" I always say working synergisticaly with calcium. Magnesium allows the muscles to relax. A balanced supplement needs to have both Calcium and Magnesium in the proper ratio for the body to utilize it. This was a point that Ladd made repeatedly; That without the proper ratio of nutrients in supplementation effectiveness will be lost. BodyRox for growing teens who in todays world tend to live on pizza and soda pop is a convenient way for them to get what they need while setting them up for long term health throughout their lives. While the RDA is 200 mg of magnesium per day the reality is the body requires 400mg per day to be truly healthy. The other revelation was that the hot flashes experienced during menopoause are caused due to a constriction of the blood vessels that occur due to a lack of magnesium and calcium. In essence the blood is shot through the veins in spurts as it can given the burden it has trying to make it through in a shrinking passageway. Boost your supplementation and add grapeseed extract in the form of Proflavanol C to aid in healthy cardio vascular function. Note however that if you are taking blood thinners you will want to stay away from the grape seed as it can produce counter indications combined with that medication.

Cervical Health Pap Smears Breast Health

Dr. McNamara touched on human pappilloma virus which is the reason why pap smears are used. Human pappilloma virus mitigating factors are stress, smoking and oxidation. Once you have it you have it. However the good news is that boosting the immune system with the grape seed extract helps keep it in check. Cervical dysplasia a precursor of cervical cancer. HDV is a virus that leads to dysplasia. Cervical health is of course linked to immune health and while disease is always a possibility the chances of unhealthy cells being duplicated can be minimized with optimal amounts of Proflavanol C 100.  Proflavanol C 100  is a unique patented Hybrid supplement created by Usana that combines pure grape seed extract with Vitamin C.
The Essentials, Biomega and Vitamin D works synergistically in maintaining breast, cervical and even prostrate health in men. In addition the Hepasil DTX which is made from pure milk thistle and vitamin C is an aid as the liver does so much to digest and deliver nutrients. The takeaway here is to understand that you nutritional pipeline needs to be optimal in all areas as the body uses these essential nutrients in more than one area of the body.  As for breast health here is an encouraging insight by Dr. Christiane Northrup a pioneer in Women's health with four books on the subject.
" My quick take on the news of Angelina Jolie's bilateral mastectomies: The vast majority of women who get breast cancer have NO genetic risk factors. Optimal levels of vitamin D decrease breast cancer risk by 50%. Far too many women are already getting prophylactic mastectomies for DCIS-- which they will die with but not from. The combination of Jolie's celebrity and the current fear of breast cancer is a most unfortunate situation for most women. And yes-- there are instances in which prophylactic surgery is indeed a sound choice. But they are very very rare. "  -  Wednesday May 15, 2013 Also see the NY Times Op Ed here

Dr. Ladd McNamara On Mother Baby Health Why Prenatal Vitamins

Babycare PreNatal Vitamins Now Available from USANA

It's spring time and all over the city life is in bloom. Mother's Day is one week away and lately I have been getting asked from several woman around me what I would recommend in terms of supplementation during pregnancy and what we have to offer for children. I am glad you asked! Here are some notes I compiled weeks ago from a webinar  conducted by  OBGYN Dr. Ladd McNamara. The attendance of his webinar was through the roof with 750 people registered making it quite clear that this information is needed.  People are starting to make the connection between the health of the mother to the child's long term health and intergenerational health. The phrase " I got if from my mother's side" took on a deeper meaning here with his deconstruction of conditions with a strategy of knowledge to manage them before they occur. Dr. McNamara is repeating this webinar on this topic this Wednesday May 8th at 6PM PST/9PM EST It's free but you must register here

The link between Mother & Baby Diabetes Bifidia Asthma Post Partum Depression

The nutritional needs of a pregnant women increases dramatically since all vital nutrients will be directed to the unborn fetus first. Ideally you want to be on optimal supplementation a minimum of three months before becoming pregnant. Here are some of the points made by Dr. McNamara on why nutrients are important before, during and post pregnancy.
Folic Acid - 500 miligrams twice daily to avoid spinobifida in the baby. This is an unfortunate condition where the spinal cord of the child does not close.
Vitamin D - 4000 IU's daily for you and baby help prevent infantile asthma or wheezing and help the mother keep her immune system strong and the blues away post partum.
Vitamin E - Helps with the absorption of iron and is important for healthy brain development in your baby.
Iron - Blood volume in women increases by 50% during pregnancy. Not all anemias are caused by iron deficiencies however you want to make sure you are getting what you need.
Iodine - 150 milligrams is not considered enough. Inadequate levels of iodine have been linked to miscarriages and hypertension.
Vitamin A in the form of beta carotene  is the equavilent of eating 1 carrot daily. This form of beta carotene is non toxic and is not associated with birth defects. A deficiency is associated with gestational diabetes with babes born much larger than they should be making delivery difficult puting both the baby and mother at risk. Gestational diabetes is a harbinger of Type 2 Diabetes so by insuring you get optimal amounts of A in the form of beta carotene can help prevent your child and you from developing this condition later.
Pregnant mothers also require more calcium, magnesium, selenium, vanadium and manganese to insure the development of the brain, the bones and a healthy heart in the fetus.
However, dealing with pregnancy and post partum are just as important as depression can occur after delivery. Dr. McNamara has books on this topic through his website

What's in That Protein Shake? Healthy Sugars and Why You Need Them

There is a gross misconception about sugars that have been vilified in the media. While it's true that what I like to call industrial sugars are damaging, the naturally occurring ones found in fruits, vegetables and grains are accompanied by a whole host of nutrients. Like anything dealing with the human body and the planet, a deeper look that goes beyond a sound bite is critical to getting the full picture. During a Let's Go Outside! fitness and fun class I co- lead this weekend, a guest had a question and wanted to know if the Dutch Chocolate Nutrimeal protein shake I was distributing "had sugar" in it. What the guest really wanted to know really was I offering something detrimental to everyone's health. The fact is your body and brain require sugars to function. The brain needs it and without it will cease to function properly. Some healthy sugars that you can use around the house are Raw Honey, Amasake, Organic Sugar grown without pesticides or chemicals, Black Strap Molasses, Stevia and Xylitol. As for unhealthy sugars four words: Stay Away from Soda! For young mother's Bernando LaPallo points out that applesauce one of the first foods you give your baby should be unsweetend to avoid setting up your child for diabetes. Add a little ground cinnamon that has a natural sweet taste to it if you like. Adding table sugar to it impedes the ability to enjoy the natural sweetness of the apple, hooks the baby on unhealthy sugars making it be hard for them to eat whole foods later on.

Clearing Up Sugar Confusion

Oscar Puig, CN  has this to say about the topic:
"Sugars are found in whole foods in the form of simple glucose, fructose and galactose such as those found in dietary carbohydrates like vegetables, fruits and grains. These are classified has monosaccharides. They are easy to digest and fast to get to our blood stream. They are packed with nutrients and beneficial fiber because they come from whole foods. However, our food industry has created non-nourishing natural and artificial sweeteners that can be damaging to the body. The best examples of this would be processed sucrose and high fructose corn syrup (“natural” sweeteners) and sucralose and aspartame (artificial sweeteners). Although naturally-derived, sucrose and high fructose corn syrup present in most processed foods can increase the probability of impaired liver function and fat deposits (fatty liver)..." This article by Puig is very helpful and you can read More here
Getting back to the protein shake in question Dutch Chocolate Nutrimeal contains 17 grams of sugar derived from fructose or fruits. Here is the ingredient list. And one last point the way you will lose weight fastest and sanely is to watch your caloric intake. Nutrimeal is one way you can make sure you are getting all your body requires with only a 240 to 250 calories provided you use water only to make your shake. When you start adding milk and the like you double your caloric intake. Most today are consuming 3000 to 3500 calories per day when it is better to be around 2000 calories per day on average. This unfortunate trend is reflected in the skyrocketing epidemic of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and even cancers North Americans are experiencing in all age brackets. Adding plenty of fiber to your daily regime will also help you feel fuller while keeping your colon clean.
